PINGRUP RACES
ABOUT THE RACES

HISTORY
The Pingrup Races, which commenced in 1932, hold a distinguished legacy within the community. Pingrup boasts a rich tradition of breeding thoroughbred racehorses. Throughout the decades spanning the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, horse breeding and racing evolved from a mere pastime to a significant profession for many locals. Esteemed individuals such as Steve Wolfe, Dixie Solly, Murray Reid, and Kevin Smith emerged from the community, achieving notable success in the local horse racing industry, particularly within the Albany region.
The inaugural Race Meet originated as a picnic sports gathering on a racetrack situated just north of town within a farmer’s paddock. In 1950, the event transitioned to its present venue, the Pingrup Recreation Ground. Notably, during the 1960s, the state 440-yard running championships were held in tandem with the local race day.
PRESENT
The Pingrup Race Meet features a program of six races commencing at approximately 1pm. The highlight of the event is the prestigious Murray Reid Memorial Cup, held later in the afternoon. Embodying tradition and excitement, the Pingrup Races offer a range of amenities including an outdoor bar, wine tasting, fashion events, daytime entertainment, evening two-up, and live musical performances.
